What size system does your home actually need?

5 minute read · Updated August 2026

Softeners are sold by grain capacity, a number like 48,000 that most websites never explain. Here is the short answer: the grain number does not decide whether a system can serve your house. Flow rate does that, and every system we install carries 28 gallons per minute, more than double the industry standard. The grain number decides something much simpler, which is how often you top up the salt.

What a "grain" is

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon. A grain is a tiny unit of dissolved mineral, and a softener's capacity is how many grains it can capture between self cleaning cycles. A 48,000 grain system can remove 48,000 grains of hardness before it needs to regenerate.

The math behind sizing is simple multiplication:

People × gallons per person per day × your water's hardness = grains used per day.

Example: a family of four using around 75 gallons each, on typical LA water at 12 grains per gallon, uses about 3,600 grains a day. A 48,000 grain system handles well over a week between cleanings, which is exactly the comfortable margin you want.

What the capacity actually buys you

A bigger tank is more media, nothing more complicated than that. More media means more grains captured before the system cleans itself, which means a longer stretch between regenerations and a bag of salt going in less often.

That is the whole difference. A larger tank does not soften harder, and a smaller one does not run out of water or lose pressure in a big house. Every capacity we sell moves the same 28 gallons per minute. So the honest way to choose is convenience: how often do you want to think about salt?

The three capacities we install

SystemCapacityWhat that means day to dayPrice installed
Standard48,000 grainsAbout a week between regenerations for a family of four$2,999
Whole Home XL64,000 grainsA third more media, so noticeably longer between regenerations$3,650
Dual Tank96,000 grainsThe longest run between regenerations we build$3,999

The number that actually sizes a system: flow rate

Capacity decides how often the system cleans. Flow rate decides whether your showers stay strong while the dishwasher runs, and it is the only one of the two that has anything to do with the size of your house. Undersized valves and three quarter inch plumbing are a common corner cut in cheap systems, and the result is a pressure drop the whole family notices.

Every system we install runs a full 1.25 inch line at 28 gallons per minute, against an industry standard of 10 to 15. That is enough to run multiple showers and appliances at once without a pressure penalty, in any of the three capacities. It is why there is no house we cannot serve with the Standard.

Questions we ask to size you

  • How many people live in the home?
  • How many bathrooms?
  • Roughly how large is the house?
  • Where is your shut off valve?

That is genuinely the whole interview. Two minutes, then a firm number. We ask about people and bathrooms to work out how fast you will use up a tank of media, not to find out whether your house is too big for us. It is not. If the Standard is the right call we will say so, because an oversold tank helps a commissioned rep, not you.

Four questions away from a firm number.

People, bathrooms, square footage, valve. We'll do the math.
